Add or remove sales tax from any price.

Loading tool…

The Sales Tax Calculator adds tax to a price or strips it back out of a tax-inclusive total. Type any amount and your local sales tax, VAT or GST rate, then pick Add tax to see the tax and gross total, or Remove tax to recover the pre-tax net. The math runs live in your browser, so it is instant, free and private — nothing is sent to a server.

How to use Sales Tax Calculator

Switch between two modes at the top. Add tax takes a pre-tax price and shows the tax and the final total; Remove tax takes a tax-inclusive total and works backwards to the net price. Enter your amount and your local rate as a percentage — like 8.25, 20 or 5 — and both the tax and the result update the instant you type.

Adds or removes tax

One toggle flips between adding tax to a net price and pulling it back out of a tax-inclusive total.

Any tax system

Works with US sales tax, EU/UK VAT or GST — just enter the percentage that applies to you.

Instant and private

The calculation runs in your browser as you type, with no sign-up and nothing uploaded.

Add sales tax to a quote

Building a customer quote or invoice from a pre-tax price? Use Add tax to see exactly how much tax to charge and the gross total the customer pays. Enter the subtotal and your state or county rate, and the tool splits out the tax line and the final amount so your paperwork matches what you collect.

Find the pre-tax price from a total

When a receipt or sticker shows only the tax-inclusive price, Remove tax recovers the net figure for expense reports and bookkeeping. It divides the total by one plus the rate, so a $54.30 charge at 8.5% reveals a $50.05 net price and $4.25 of tax to record separately in your accounts.

Compare prices across tax rates

Shopping or selling across different cities, states or countries means different tax rates on the same item. Enter one amount and swap the rate to see how an 8.25% local sales tax, a 20% VAT or a 10% GST changes the final price, making it easy to compare the true out-the-door cost in each place.

Calculate VAT for an EU or UK order

Add the correct VAT to an order or strip it from a gross figure for a VAT return. Enter your country's rate — 20% in the UK, 21% in the Netherlands, 19% in Germany — and use Add tax to bill a net price, or Remove tax to separate the VAT element already baked into a gross total for your records.

Sales Tax Calculator — frequently asked questions

How is sales tax calculated?

Tax = price × rate ÷ 100, and the total is price + tax. For example, $100 at 8.25% adds $8.25 of tax for a $108.25 total.

How do I remove sales tax from a total?

Divide the gross total by (1 + rate ÷ 100) to get the net price; the tax is the total minus that net. A $108.25 total at 8.25% works back to $100.00 plus $8.25 tax. Dividing by the rate alone is wrong.

Can I use it for VAT or GST instead of US sales tax?

Yes. The math is identical for any percentage tax, so enter your VAT rate (e.g. 20% UK, 19% Germany) or GST rate (e.g. 10% Australia) in the rate field.

Why might the total differ from my receipt by a cent?

Stores often tax each line item and round individually, while this tool taxes the whole amount once, so a rounding cent can differ. Always treat the result as a close estimate.

Is anything I enter sent to a server?

No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser — your amounts and rate never leave your device and nothing is stored.
