Markup Calculator — frequently asked questions
What formula does the markup calculator use?
Selling price = cost x (1 + markup / 100). Profit = selling price minus cost. Margin = profit / selling price x 100. So a 70 cost with 43% markup gives 100.10 price, 30.10 profit, and a 30.07% margin.
What is the difference between markup and margin?
Markup is profit as a percentage of cost; margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price. They are always different — a 43% markup equals roughly a 30% margin, because the price is the larger denominator.
Does the currency or units matter?
No. The calculator is unit-agnostic and works in any currency — dollars, euros, pounds, rupees. Enter cost in whatever currency you sell in and the price and profit come back in that same currency.
How accurate are the results?
Results are mathematically exact for the values you enter and displayed to two decimal places. It does not add sales tax, shipping, or fees — fold those into your cost first if you want them reflected in the price.
Is my pricing data private?
